5000 reported dead already and everyday the deaths are mounting. The newspapers headlines read the following: “Deadly clashes 24 killed” “Fighting erupts again 14 more killed”. How can it be possible that one only cares about staying in power? Asma Assad once gave an interview to CNN about how sick she felt about what the children and families in Gaza go through because of the Israelis. I wonder if Asma can sleep at night knowing what her husband is letting happen to her own people. Thousands are being tortured in the most horrific ways. Hundreds are not able to bury their loved ones. Hundreds are forbidden from knowing anything about those who have vanished from their lives. I hate hypocrites. Asma Assad sure is one. She is fake. She pretends like she cares about the Palestinians so much but then lets her husband treat the Syrians like this. The Israelis used to try to make people believe that there were no such thing as Palestinians. It’s like the Assad regime is trying to do the same thing. Maybe if we get rid of these people then the problems won’t exist anymore because the people won’t exist anymore. How many more of your own people are you going to kill Assad so that this problem will go away and you can stay in your pretty little palace?!
It is not just the time it took to type. But to actually type it one by one, as an act of remembering. Meditating on each stump to the keyboard. Each sound aches in the heart. It is not to fall on sentimentalism, but to remember human warmth and the lack of it.
We are used to digital images, and the impact of numbers always grows when it is hand written. Yet this is also hand written in a way, one by one, and trying to reach a larger audience. Try to type… but better… just reflect.
Mahmoud Darwish said once: “death does not hurt the dead but it is hurting the living”. I say those who don’t feel anything by seeing these numbers, I won’t consider as people or human, they are just dead. They want to deny that by supporting the regime they are partners in this crime. I say to this people that I respect other opinions, I am not asking everyone to be with the revolution or against the government, but arresting, torturing and killing people for expressing their opinion (plus children who didn’t have a chance to express their opinion yet), cannot be tolerated. People supporting the regime: you are blind, you don’t know that governments always change but Syrians will stay always the same: freedom and dignity .
Excellent representation — and then to think that each X has perhaps 1-12 more X’s whose lives are devastated and forever changed. Too often our media confuse statistics with people, forgetting that each X is somebody’s child, and possibly somebody else’s parent.
